Antimicrobial Agents & Chemotherapy Minicourse

Summary:

This course has been designed to provide participants with a comprehensive review of the mechanisms of action and pharmacodynamics of the antimicrobial agents, the molecular mechanisms of resistance expressed by bacteria, the methods of susceptibility testing used to detect antibacterial resistance, and the role of expert systems in identifying resistance phenotypes in the clinical laboratory. In addition to lectures, a susceptibility testing laboratory will be presented to give participants experience in reading the results of susceptibility assays.

Intended Audience:

Individuals in the pharmaceutical industry and scientists in academia/clinical laboratories needing instruction in antimicrobial agents and chemotherapy, susceptibility testing, antibacterial pharmacodynamics, and molecular mechanisms of resistance. Background in anti-infectives, microbiology or infectious disease helpful, but not a prerequisite.
